Bryce Dickey and Britney Ujlaky met at a rodeo in Spring Creek, Nevada, when she was just 15 years old. Over the next year, the two became very close friends. Britney called him her “Big Brother,” and Dickey called her “Lil Sis” to everyone they knew. But behind this friendly picture, Dickey had developed romantic feelings for Britney. When he told her how he felt, she said she did not feel the same way. She still wanted to be his friend, and Dickey said that was okay. It was not. Two weeks after that conversation, on March 8, 2020, Britney asked Dickey to give her a ride, and she never came back.

When Britney did not come home that evening, her family called Dickey to ask when he last saw her. He claimed he dropped Britney off at Spring Creek High School and saw her leave with a man in a green truck. Police first took his story seriously. But Britney’s body was found hidden under a blue tarp in the Elko County wilderness, showing signs of strangulation, a knife wound to the neck, and possible sexual assault. The cowboy in the green truck was never found — because he never existed.

Investigators quickly found holes in Dickey’s story. Surveillance video near Spring Creek High School contradicted his statement, as his pickup was seen driving in the opposite direction. A used condom found in a nearby bush matched a box from Dickey’s truck, and it contained his DNA on the inside and Britney’s on the outside. Police also found boots and a sweatshirt with reddish-brown stains, and a knife hidden inside one of the boots at his home. Friends searching for Britney also testified that Dickey steered them away from the area after watching their location on a social media app. He was arrested on March 19, 2020.

After a nine-day trial, a jury found Dickey guilty of first-degree murder and sexual assault with a deadly weapon. At sentencing, the judge called the murder a heinous crime, saying a young woman with a bright and promising future had her life stolen from her. Dickey received a life sentence with the possibility of parole only after serving 70 years. Dickey tried to appeal, but the Nevada Supreme Court affirmed his 2022 conviction in January 2024. Britney’s mother Alisha said the family has been surviving, not living, and promised to fight to keep him behind bars for the rest of her life.
